Interoperative Optical Coherence Tomography

We are developing optical coherence tomography (OCT) for rapid intraoperative histology. OCT is a powerful, noninvasive microscopic imaging tool widely used for clinical diagnosis, particularly in ophthalmology and cardiology. Previously, we created needle beam (NB) technology to address the classic trade-off between resolution and depth-of-focus, enabling the rapid generation of 3D high-resolution images. We applied NB-OCT for skin cancer diagnosis and developed AI-based virtual histology imaging of living tissues.

Currently, we have two ongoing projects. The first involves developing an NB-OCT endoscope in collaboration with the da Vinci surgical system. This project aims to detect neurovascular bundles (NVB) to protect them from damage during prostate cancer surgery. The second project focuses on building a full-field OCT for rapid intraoperative histology of tumor resection specimens based on innate cell vibrations. This label-free, cellular-resolution technique can analyze an area of 100 cm² within 10 minutes, enabling precise analysis of tumor margins and improving surgical outcomes.
